Our staff
Our staff are all highly qualified, some are home educators themselves, many hold Master's degrees and all bring a wealth of experience working with children and young people. Our staff are amongst the most experienced online educators of children in the country. Tutoring Staff Rebecca Anderson, MA (Cantab), PGCSE (Cantab) Rebecca Anderson is our newest member of staff, joining us in September 2009 to tutor French and German courses. Rebecca has previously been Second in charge of the Modern Languages Department at Saffron Waldon County High School. She was also home educated in Gabon in West Africa where she prepared for her GCSEs by correspondence college.
Joy Cheang, B.A hons (Birmingham) Joy joined us during the 2007-2008 academic year to provide maternity cover for Shelley Turnbull, however, she did such a good job that we could not let her go! Joy now tutors our English 6-9 courses, enabling Shelley to have a wider responsibility for online curriculum development
Angela Cocks, B.Ed hons (Portsmouth) Angela is currently on maternity leave, expecting the arrival of twins shortly! After her maternity leave is over, Angela will be working on the production of new pre-GCSE web-based Science courses. She has previously been a secondary Head of Year and Head of Department. She is married and has a young son. She is a youth worker at her local church and enjoys playing the violin.
Beryl Cowen, BA hons (Nottingham), PGCE (Man) Beryl has tutored with NorthStarUK since 1999, being one of our originals! Beryl tutors all of our social science courses. She brings a wealth of experience to NorthStarUK, having taught at a Christian school in Manchester for many years as well as holding a leadership role within her local church. She is also a grandmother.
Ross Evans, Senior Tutor, BA hons (Wales), BSc hons (Open), MEd (CCHE), DipEd (Wales), DASE (Man) Ross is another of our original tutors who has worked with NorthStarUK since 1999. He is our Senior Tutor and for many years was Headteacher at Trinity Christian School in Stalybridge. Ross tutors all of our geography courses. He holds a Master's degree from the National Institute of Christian Studies in Australia. He is a Welshman by birth and a keen supporter of Sale Sharks, Gloucester and Wales rugby teams. He has two daughters, both of whom are married to professional rugby players and he has recently become a grandfather, twice!
Molly Fletcher, BA hons (London) Molly has tutored with NorthStarUK for a number of years, previously delivering our GCSE English Language and Literature courses. She now has responsibility for development and tutoring on the new Edexcel IGCSE English courses commencing in September 2009. Molly is an experienced educator having previously worked in pastoral roles within further education as well as being an ordained minister. She has an enthusiasm for cooking and playing the piano for her grandchildren's school choir practice. She says that she "hates rudeness, inconsiderate behaviour and all forms of discrimination"
Nicky Griffin-Appadoo, BA hons (CNAA), PGCE (Sheff), MSc (Salford), Cert 4 in Assessment & Workplace Training (AISWA) A graduate of Sheffield City Polytechnic, Nicky emigrated to Australia some years ago. She now lives in Perth in Western Australia where she has acquired considerable experience teaching in a number of Christian schools. She is a self-confessed lingua-phile, having a particular passion for Spanish and French. Nicky tutors all of our Spanish courses in NorthStarUK.
Ann Humphreys, BA hons, PGCE Ann lives in Sheffield where she is involved in a small community church, involved in taking church to people. She joined NorthStarUK as a chemistry tutor a number of years ago, adding maths 7 to 9 to her portfolio in 2008. She brings a wealth of teaching experience to her role as a tutor; whether her renewed enthusiasm for sewing can ever be exploited within NSUK, however, remains to be seen!
Angela Mallett, BA hons (Keele) CertEd, PGCE (CPD) (Birm) Angela is another of our 'old' originals, having been involved with NorthStarUK from the start in 1999. Angela is our Senior English Tutor and currently tutors our CiE IGCSE English Language and Literature courses. Angela lives in Solihill with her husband Rob, who also tutors with NorthStarUK. Angela has previously taught in both Christian and Muslim schools in the UK. She has three grown up children.
Rob Mallett, BA hons, FCA. Rob joined NorthStarUK a number of years ago as our business studies tutor. As a qualified accountant, Rob brings a wealth of experience of real world employment and business, having worked as a Finance Director for a number of large housing associations, along with genuine ability as a tutor to his work for NorthStarUK. As well as working part-time for NorthStarUK, Rob undertakes consultancy work specialising in housing association administration. He is married to Angela, our Senior English Tutor. Rob attends a Baptist Church in Solihull.
Maryan Piano, BA hons (Warwick), MA (Westchester) Maryan joined NorthStarUK as Latin tutor in 2007, after a number of years as a NorthStarUK mum! Maryan lives In Madrid with her husband and children. Maryan has a real passion for all things classical which she shares with the students in her course. .
Steve Parkinson, BSc hons, CertEd After spending 34 years teaching Physics in a large secondary school, Steve took early retirement and joined NorthStarUK as our physics tutor. He is married and has two daughters and six grandchildren. He is a Reader in his local Anglican Church, a keen gardener and an even keener golfer. He is also a Wigan Athletic supporter! He lives on the southern edge of the Lake District, overlooking Morecambe Bay. Steve Richards, BEd hons (Wales), MA (Educ) London, MEd (Open) Steve has been Educational Director of NorthStarUK from its creation in 1999. He tutors all of NSUK's history courses. He and his wife Lyn home educated their three daughters up to GCSE and are enjoying the opportunity to have another 'go' at it with their 15 year old son! Steve is an enthusiastic Welshman and keen rugby fan. Steve has spoken widely about home education and online learning.
Christine Stamper, BSc hons, MMedSci, PGCE, DipChemEd Christine joined NorthStarUK in 2006 after teaching in a sixth form college in Barnsley for 25 years. She tutors our IGCSE biology and coordinated science courses. Christine has two daughters both of whom are enthusiastic dancers. She attends a local Methodist Church, where she runs a children's club with her husband. Shelley Turnbull, BA hons (Curtin), DipEd (UWA) Shelley has worked with NorthStarUK for many years. She is possibly our most travelled tutor, having lived in a number of places around the world, including Derby! She is an innovate and creative curriculum developer. She tutored NorthStarUK's English 6-9 courses for a number of years, but now has responsibility for online curriculum development in English. She currently lives in Perth in Western Australia with her husband and young daughter, Tess Cate. Martin Warburton, BA (Open), MCIEA Martin has worked with NSUK since 2001. He tutors all of our ICT courses. Martin has taught in a Christian school in the UK and has previously worked part time as Operations Manager for a mission agency. He is curretly a Senior Examiner in ICT for one of the Examination Boards. He has represented NorthStarUK at EUREKA conferences on a number of occasions. He is married with three grown-up children.
Tracey Wood, BEng (Cranfield), PGCE (Durham) Tracey tutors NorthStarUK's GCSE and IGCSE maths courses. She is married to Don and they have three children. As a home educating mum and experienced teacher Tracey brings considerable experience and understanding to her work with NorthStarUK. Having moved to Canada, from County Durham in 2008, Tracey and her family are returning to the UK during this summer.
Administrative and Pastoral Staff Jo Storie, BSc hons Jo is our Net Nanny, or BigSis as she is known within the NorthStarUK community! She has been involved in children and youth work for many years and has a desire to see youngsters growing up to be all that God calls them to be and for them to serve Him and others with passion. Jo has three grown up children who she also home educated for five years and so understands the demands placed upon home educating parents. She currently lives in Latvia.
Julie Thompson Julie has worked as NorthStarUK's administrator since 2000. She is married and has two teenage children. With her husband, Richard, she is a house group leader at her local church and is a keen biker! She works part-time as a biomedical scientist at a north Derbyshire hospital.
