NorthStarUK is a community of learners working and studying in an online context. It uses the internet to link students with other students. Students are also linked to qualified tutors, who facilitate formal education and mark assignments.
Using our web-based virtual learning environment, Moodle, and conventional email, tutors develop significant relationships with their students. They act as facilitators, rather than teachers, providing tutorial support, facilitating group discussion and evaluating students' assignments. Towards the end of each year, they set examinations and write a report on student progress through the year. They provide key learning support for students.
Students complete their assigned work using textbooks, Britannica Online Student Edition, CDROMs and other educational resources. Lessons and assignments are posted in courses on Moodle, where students can download them and work at times to suit themselves. Work is returned to tutors electronically for marking and comment.
At the heart of NorthStarUK is an asynchronous learning model that effectively returns control for learning to the student and the their family. This means that tutor-student interaction does not take place in real time.
